Newton-le-Willows Primary School is a fully inclusive school. The key principle that our school adopts is that each child is a unique individual and has the right to education which develops their full potential. They have the right to a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and the right to access the whole curriculum. Every child has the right to expect to make progress.

All children are entitled to an education that enables them to:

  • Achieve their best

  • Become confident individuals living fulfilling lives; and

  • Make a successful transition to adulthood

At Newton-le-Willows Primary School, great care is taken to identify and support children who have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than many others of the same age, or who have a disability which prevents them from making use of educational facilities.

Each pupil’s existing skills and attainment levels are assessed upon entry. Progress is then monitored regularly. If a pupil begins to fall behind or makes limited progress—despite receiving high-quality teaching tailored to their specific areas of need—the class teacher and SENCO collaborate with parents or carers to determine whether the pupil may have a significant learning difficulty. If so, they work together to agree on the appropriate SEN support required.

Identification includes the use of high-quality assessment and where necessary, may include more specialised assessments from external agencies and professionals.

Parents and carers know their children best, and we value their insights. We listen carefully and take their concerns about their child’s development seriously. We also ensure that children’s own views and concerns are heard and responded to with care and understanding.

When concerns about a pupil’s needs increase, we may involve external agencies such as the Educational Psychology Service or Speech and Language Therapy. In some cases, this involvement may lead to a formal assessment, which could result in an application for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

All children are supported, regardless of their current level of progress or attainment, through adapted planning by class teachers and collaboration with other professionals. For those who need extra help in specific subjects or areas of learning, targeted interventions are put in place to provide additional support.

Parent Voice: ‘I cannot fault the process from recognising need, meetings, contacting agencies and getting my child the support they need. My child has made the progress they have because of the school.’

Pupil Voice: ‘I trust you because you understand me and made me feel safe. You get me!’
