Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is quickly becoming a popular subject in many primary schools in the borough, including our own school.
It is a statutory requirement that every child should have the opportunity throughout Key Stage 2 to study a foreign language and develop their interest in the culture of other nations.
The purpose of studying a foreign language
Learning a foreign language provides children an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
National Languages Strategy
Throughout Key Stage 2, our children are taught MFL throughout the year. Spanish is the language that the children are learning.
Displays and posters around the school help the children to have an active role in their own learning.
We make good use of the school’s ICT facilities in our teaching of other languages and cultures where it is purposeful.
