Personalised Learning

‘Personalised Learning’ is all about putting children at the heart of learning. It isn’t a new initiative, many schools have been tailoring the curriculum for years to suit the individual needs of the children, what is new, is the wanting it to become universal.

A personalised approach to supporting children means:
‘Tailoring learning to the needs, interests and aspirations of each individual.’
‘Tackling barriers to learning and allowing each child to achieve their potential.’

There are five key components to Personalised learning:

Beyond The School - Strengthening links between school and the community, parental involvement, homework diaries/logs etc.

Effective Teaching & learning - Widening teachers' repertoire; acknowledging that children may be visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learners; learning as individuals, in groups and as a whole class, through, for example, Computing and Drama.

Assessment For Learning - Teachers and children need to know areas of strength & areas for development; the importance of target setting and children having ownership of these targets; providing feedback; tracking data; peer and self assessment.

Curriculum Entitlement - A broad, tailored, creative and flexible curriculum that suits the children’s needs, enabling them to make clear connections between skills and subjects.

School As A Learning Organisation - School leaders focusing on teaching and learning, ensuring creativity and flexibility in the way the curriculum and workforce is organised; ensuring that buildings facilitate personalised learning etc.
