Winter Planning:  Adverse Weather Conditions

Information for Parents

  1.  If heavy overnight snowfall, sleet or ice is forecast, the school will be put on ‘Weather Standby’ the day before if possible.

 

1a  In the event of snowfall, sleet or ice in the first instance we will clear a path from     the main school gates to the Year 6 door (labelled door number 2), for all pupils to enter the school. 

 

  1. If heavy overnight snowfall or any unforeseen disaster makes it advisable not to open school for the day, a decision will be taken early in the morning (usually by 7.00am) by the headteacher and the following action will be taken:

 

  1. The council will be informed of the closure and they will update their website with all school closures within the authority.  www.sthelens.gov.uk

 

  1. A text message will be sent to parents as early as possible to inform of any closure.

 

  1. The school website will be updated to report any closure. (www.newton.st-helens.sch.uk)

 

  1. Staff living close to school will endeavour to answer the telephones from 7.30am and posters will be placed on windows / doors advising of school closure.

 

  1.  Local radio stations will also be informed via the council of any closures

  1. In the event of serious snowfall during the day, we may have to close the school early.  No plan can cover all eventualities the  most likely situation is:

 

  1. Should serious snowfall occur it may be necessary to arrange (by text, telephone or email) for children to be collected early.  In this case there may be difficulties particularly for younger pupils and their parents. We shall make provision for pupils who need to telephone home and for those who need to wait in school to be collected.

Unless there is notice to this effect, the school will be open.
